The Southern California Institute of Architecture in Los Angeles is regarded as one of the most inventive architecture schools in the world. Fabrication and Fabrication offers a unique look at the current state of digital design and fabrication in contemporary architecture. Alongside an extensive review of work done in SCI-Arc’s Robot House, contributions from Eric Owen Moss, Patrik Schumacher, and Peter Testa take stock of what contemporary digital production addresses most effectively, as well as matters it might currently neglect. In addition, the book includes the first English translation of Andries van Onck’s 1964 text, Metadesign and important early theorization of computational strategies in architecture.
We designed the SCI-Arc Viewbook and recruiting materials for the 2014–2015 school year. The strategy of this edition was to showcase the student, alumni, and faculty work instead of mirroring content that could be found on the site. The book features work alongside testimonials about the school and current state of architecture from SCI-Arc's point of view. In addition to the book, we also updated SCI-Arc's online viewbook to match the visual language of the printed collateral for SCI-Arc's recruiting team.
Edited by architect and SCI-Arc faculty member John Bohn, Applied Dynamics compiles a collection of essays and architectural responses to the reconstruction of Japan's Tohoku, a region greatly affected by the 2011 earthquake and tsunami. The book features both English and Japanese translations of the text and 20pp color plates of the students research and designs. The layout of the book provides a seamless reading experience for both languages while incorporating related charts and images.
In conjunction with the 2013 SCI-Arc graduation ceremony. We designed the look and feel for the graduation event which was applied to numerous materials including the graduate thesis publication which is distributed at the ceremony. The publication is a 198 page collection of each student’s thesis statement and work. In addition to the 160pp 2-color catalog, we also designed the campus map, invitation, signage, vinyl, and other printed matter.
Originally conceived as a printed publication in the early 1990’s, the new incarnation of Offramp was re-introduced as an online journal through the SCI-Arc Design Fellowship. We worked with SCI-Arc on the design and development of the new online journal. The site is fully responsive and content managed.
The posters for SCI-Arc's Gallery are often created in close collaboration with the architect or curator themselves and are visual representations of the exhibitions, artist, and designer together. We've also designed the schools lecture series poster and materials for other school initiatives including the annual Solar Decathlon entry for the Department of Energy and alumni events.
